When people hear I used to be a SWAT officer, they expect stories about high-stakes takedowns or adrenaline-filled moments. But the most transformative moment of my law enforcement career came not on a callout—but in a hotel parking lot.

That moment led me to create a method that now helps corporate leaders, law enforcement professionals, and trauma survivors redefine how they communicate, lead, and live.

🎙️ I recently shared the full story on the March or Die Show podcast.

🚓 From Law Enforcement to Leadership Development

My career started in the Texas prison system before moving into law enforcement. I worked as a detective, SWAT breacher, and training lieutenant—with a focus on communication and defensive tactics. Along the way, I became obsessed with content analysis: the study of how people’s language reveals truth—or deception.

But I never expected that same technique would expose something in me.

When my truck was vandalized during a trip to Houston, I had to write a statement for the insurance company. While reviewing it, I caught a subtle but powerful shift in my wording:

“I gave my truck to the valet. When I got the truck back, it was keyed.”

Why did I suddenly distance myself from something I had just called mine?

That was the moment I realized:

If our words reveal what we truly believe, what else are we unknowingly saying to ourselves?

🧠 Introducing the WAVE Method: Interrogate Your Language, Change Your Life

This epiphany sparked the development of the WAVE Method—a self-interrogation process I teach in leadership workshops and keynotes.

W.A.V.E. stands for:

  • Words – Recognize disempowering phrases like try, plan to, need to, or should.

  • Awareness – Notice these in real time and question your intent.

  • Verify – Review your writing and speech for weak or evasive language.

  • Engage – Invite accountability from someone who will call you out with love and precision.

💬 “Walk up to your spouse and say, ‘I’ll try to be faithful.’ See how that lands."

That's how seriously language matters.

🔑 Why Language Is the Gateway to Emotional Intelligence

Most people think they’re just “frustrated” or “fine.” But vague words mask unprocessed emotion and stalled growth.

Through my work with Proactive Leadership and the Emotional Matrix tool, I’ve helped thousands of professionals expand their emotional vocabulary—a key element of high emotional intelligence.

Whether you're a:

  • First responder dealing with trauma

  • Corporate executive under pressure

  • Parent trying to communicate better

  • …you need the ability to name, own, and redirect your emotional state.

When you do, you unlock a whole new level of clarity, resilience, and personal leadership.

🛠 How Trauma Recovery Begins With Language

In the episode, we also dive into:

  • The danger of tying your identity to a role or title that can be taken away

  • How to use storytelling and structured recall to unpack trauma

  • Why accountability is your greatest ally in becoming the leader—and person—you want to be

As I shared:

“It's dangerous to attach your identity to something that can be taken away from you.”

If you’ve ever lost your job, rank, relationship—or sense of purpose—you know what I mean.

But here’s the good news:

You can choose who you become next.

And it starts with the words you speak to yourself.
